As someone who’s always been drawn to the raw beauty of nature, Jaldapara had been on my wishlist for a while. last november, I finally got the chance to experience it — not just as a tourist, but as a quiet observer of the wild, tucked away in the heart of it all at Jaldapara Rhino Cottage.
The moment I arrived at Rhino Cottage, I knew I was in for something special. Surrounded by tall sal trees, with the distant call of peacocks and the occasional sounds from the wild, the air itself felt different — cleaner, calmer, more alive.
The cottage itself strikes a beautiful balance between rustic charm and comfort. Wooden interiors, a cozy veranda, and large windows that open to green expanses made it feel less like a room and more like an extension of the forest. What truly amazed me was how the property blends into the landscape — not disrupting it, but being part of it.
That evening, I sat outside with a cup of tea, watching the sun dip behind the trees. There was a stillness that cities just can’t offer. I spotted a herd of wild bisons in the distance, and our caretaker casually mentioned that wild elephants sometimes cross near the property at night. Goosebumps!
The staff helped arrange my safari for the next morning — a jeep safari through Jaldapara National Park, with an experienced forest guide. I went to bed early, knowing I had to be up by 5 a.m., but it was hard to sleep with so much anticipation.
At dawn, with mist curling over the meadows, we drove into the core area of Jaldapara National Park. The jungle was waking up. Birds called out to each other, and the forest echoed with life.
And then — just 15 minutes into the safari — we saw her: a one-horned rhinoceros, grazing peacefully near a waterbody. Majestic, calm, and completely unbothered by our presence. My heart was pounding. I had seen documentaries, read about them — but seeing this endangered beauty in real life was something else entirely.
Over the next two hours, we spotted wild elephants, peacocks, sambars, and even a crested serpent eagle perched high above. Our guide shared fascinating facts about the ecosystem, the animals, and the delicate balance that keeps it all together.
